A trailer on your own lot in Forrest and Lamar Counties

Whether a trailer can stay on your lot is decided by your city, or by the county outside city limits, and by your HOA if you have one. Here is what each one’s own code or official page says, in short. Our parent brand covers the residential RV rules for Hattiesburg area in detail.

  • City of Hattiesburg. One camper, trailer, or RV may be parked on a residential lot, but it may not be used for living, sleeping, or housekeeping on any lot, and no storm, tornado, or disaster exception was found in the current code. Ask the city before anyone moves in. Source: Hattiesburg Land Development Code, Sec. 7.12.12
  • City of Petal. Travel trailers, campers, motor homes, and other RVs may not be used for living, sleeping, or housekeeping on a residential lot. The zoning ordinance's one disaster provision covers a temporary building used with construction work, not living in an RV, so ask the Building Department before anyone moves in. Source: Petal Zoning Ordinance, Sec. 7.3
  • Unincorporated Forrest County. No official page we could find states a rule. Check with the city or county before delivery.
  • City of Purvis (Lamar County). RVs and campers may not be used for sleeping quarters in a residential district for more than 15 days a year, and no storm exception was found. Ask City Hall before anyone moves in. Source: Purvis Land Development Code, Vol. II, Art. 12, Sec. 3.5
  • Town of Sumrall (Lamar County). No official page we could find states a rule. Check with the city or county before delivery.
  • Unincorporated Lamar County. In zoned areas, travel trailers and RVs are vehicles, not dwellings, and vehicles shall not be considered a residence. After a fire, tornado, or other disaster, the Board of Supervisors may approve a manufactured or mobile home, not an RV, as a temporary dwelling in the R-1, R-2, and R-3 districts while the home is rebuilt, so ask the Planning Department before placing an RV. Source: Lamar County Zoning Ordinance (November 2022)

As of October 9, 2026, we found no statewide Isaias emergency declaration for Mississippi on the Governor's or MEMA's sites. Part of Hattiesburg lies in Lamar County; city rules apply there too.

Our parent brand explains the claim side on 1st Choice Living’s Mississippi page. Once the placement is arranged, the trailer, delivery, and service are ours.

Already working with a temporary housing company?

We work with any temporary housing company. Crew trailers on a job site in Forrest and Lamar Counties

For restoration, roofing, tree, utility, and response crews working in Hattiesburg, Petal, unincorporated Forrest County, Purvis, Sumrall, and unincorporated Lamar County. Bring the housing to the work. We deliver travel trailers to the site, or as close as the ground allows, and set up and connect them the same way we do in a driveway. A two-person crew fits one trailer. A full crew takes a cluster, and the Workforce Bunkhouse sleeps six or more per trailer, with a kitchen and a bathroom the crew shares. What the local codes say about trailers on a job site

  • City of Hattiesburg. Campers, trailers, and RVs may not be used for living, sleeping, or housekeeping on any lot. Temporary buildings and material storage tied to construction or remodeling are allowed for up to six months, with one six-month extension, and the code does not say anyone may sleep in them. No crew, watchman, or relief worker housing allowance was found. Source: Hattiesburg Land Development Code, Sec. 7.12.12
  • City of Petal. Travel trailers, campers, motor homes, and RVs may not be used for living or sleeping on a residential lot or anywhere not approved for that use. A temporary building used with construction work only is allowed while work is under way, up to 12 months after a natural disaster, fire, or other accident, and the code does not say it may be lived in. Source: Petal Zoning Ordinance, Sec. 7.3
  • Unincorporated Forrest County. No county zoning ordinance was found, so no county rule addresses crew trailers on a job site. In a special flood hazard area, an RV must be on site fewer than 180 consecutive days, or be fully licensed and ready for highway use, or meet the rules for new construction. Source: Forrest County flood damage prevention ordinance
  • City of Purvis (Lamar County). Factory-built transportable buildings may serve as temporary offices for construction and security personnel during construction under a city building permit, for up to 12 months, renewable for good cause and never more than three years. No provision lets construction or security staff live in an RV or trailer. Source: Purvis Land Development Code, Vol. II
  • Town of Sumrall (Lamar County). No official page we could find states a rule. Check with the city or county before delivery.
  • Unincorporated Lamar County. The zoning ordinance treats travel trailers and RVs as vehicles, not dwellings, and says vehicles shall not be considered a residence. It has no construction site, crew, or watchman housing provision, and it covers only the zoned parts of the county. Source: Lamar County Zoning Ordinance (November 2022)

Ask the city, or the Forrest or Lamar County planning office outside city limits, before delivery, with the address and how long the crew expects to stay. More on crew housing.

Power, water, and sewer for a trailer in Forrest and Lamar Counties

Water, sewer or septic, and electrical connections are completed by licensed, insured contractors from our preferred vendor network, so you do not hire an electrician or a plumber. We look at how far the trailer will sit from the water, sewer, and power it will use, and confirm the site with you on the call before the trailer rolls.

Electric service in Forrest and Lamar Counties comes from the utilities below. Each posts its own outage and storm updates.

Septic: Mississippi's on-site wastewater regulations cover recreational vehicles in RV parks and on tracts with several units, but we found no rule written for hooking one trailer to a home's septic system during a repair. If the trailer will tie into a septic system, ask the county health department first. Source: Mississippi State Department of Health, On-Site Wastewater Regulations

Permit offices and emergency management in Forrest and Lamar Counties

Call the office for the city where the trailer will sit, or the county office outside city limits. Ask whether a travel trailer may be used there, for how long, and which permits the hookups need.

What we need to start

  • The address where the trailer will sit
  • When you need it, and who is moving in: your household, pets included, or the crew head count
  • What the site has: a route in, firm ground close to level, and where the water, sewer or septic, and power are
  • For a company: in the form, choose “I am arranging it for someone else,” then “Employer housing a crew” or “Contractor or restoration”
  • Any approval the city, county, or HOA has given, or the office you have been working with

Questions about trailers in Forrest and Lamar Counties

Can I live in a travel trailer on my lot in Hattiesburg if Isaias leaves my house unlivable?

Not under any rule we found. Hattiesburg's Land Development Code says a camper, trailer, or RV may not be used for living, sleeping, or housekeeping on any lot, and the current code has no storm or disaster exception. Ask Community Development, Building at 601-554-1004, before delivery.

What are the RV rules in Petal and Purvis?

Petal bars living or sleeping in an RV on a residential lot, and its disaster provision covers a temporary construction building, not an RV. Purvis says RVs and campers may not be used for sleeping in a residential district for more than 15 days a year. Ask the Petal Building Department at 601-544-6048 or Purvis City Hall at 601-794-2472.

What about unincorporated Forrest and Lamar counties?

No Forrest County zoning or RV rule was found, so ask the county Planning Department. Lamar County's zoning treats RVs as vehicles, not residences, and its disaster rule lets the Board of Supervisors approve a manufactured or mobile home, not an RV, while a home is rebuilt. Ask the Lamar County Planning Department before placing an RV.

Can a crew stay in travel trailers on a job site in Hattiesburg?

No code we found allows it. Hattiesburg and Petal bar living in RVs outside approved locations, and Purvis allows factory-built offices for construction and security personnel, not living quarters. Ask the city or county before an occupied trailer goes on a site.

Do you deliver travel trailers to Hattiesburg after Hurricane Isaias?

We deliver, set up, and service trailers nationwide, and have since 2004. Put the address in the request form and we confirm the site with you on the call. Plan a delivery only once local officials, including Forrest or Lamar County Emergency Management, say the roads are safe.
